새로운 IBM 리눅스원 서버, 에너지 소비 절감으로 기업의 지속가능성 목표 달성 지원

2022 9 13서울 – IBM이 차세대 리눅스원(LinuxONE) 서버를 공개했다. 이번에 새롭게 공개된 리눅스원 서버는 높은 확장성을 갖춘 리눅스 및쿠버네티스 기반 플랫폼으로, 단일 시스템 상에서 수 천 개의 워크로드를 지원하는 확장성을 제공하도록 설계되었다[i]. 이번에 공개된 IBM 리눅스원 엠퍼러4(IBM LinuxONE Emperor 4)는 고객들의 에너지 소비를 절감할 수 있는 기능을 갖추고 있다. 예를 들어, 유사한 조건에서 운영되는 x86 워크로드를5대의 IBM 리눅스원 엠퍼러 4 시스템으로 통합할 경우, 에너지 소비량 최대 75%, 상면 공간 50% 및 탄소 배출량(CO2e, 이산화탄소환산톤, 온실가스를이산화탄소 배출량으로 환산한 값)을 연간 850 미터톤 절감할 수 있다[ii].

 

IBM 기업가치연구소(IBV) 연구 결과에 따르면, 업계 전반의 CEO 중 48%가 지속가능성을 향상시키는 것이 향후 2~3년 동안 조직의 최우선 과제 중하나라고 답했다. 동시에 응답자의 51%는 데이터 인사이트 부족, 불확실한 투자수익, 기술적 장벽 등을 이유로 지속가능성을 기업이 당면한 큰 도전과제라고 답했다. 이들에게 현재 널리 통용되고 있는 인프라 도입을 통한 비즈니스 확장은 지속가능성 목표를 달성하기 어렵게 만드는 장애물이 될 수 있다.

 

마르셀 미트란(Marcel Mitran), IBM 펠로우 겸 IBM 리눅스원 클라우드 플랫폼 최고기술책임자(CTO)는 “데이터 센터는 기업의 에너지 사용량 중 매우 큰부분을 차지하는 에너지 집약적인 시설이다. 그렇지만 데이터와 기술을 통해 기업은 지속가능성에 관한 목표를 행동으로 옮길 수 있다”고 말했다. 이어, “데이터 센터의 에너지 소비를 절감하는 것이 탄소발자국을 줄일 수 있는 실질적인 방법이다. 이런 관점에서 IBM 리눅스원으로의 전환이 기업으로 하여금디지털 비즈니스를 위한 지속가능성 목표는 물론, 확장성과 보안 목표까지 달성하는 것을 지원하도록 디자인되었다”라고 말했다.

 

IBM 리눅스원 엠퍼러 4는 수직확장을 기반으로 수평확장이 가능 (scale-out-on-scale-up )하도록 설계되었기 때문에, 에너지 사용량 및 온실 가스 배출을늘리지 않으면서 사용되지 않는 코어를 활성화함으로써 고객이 지속적으로 고도로 집적된 워크로드를 수행하고 용량을 확장할 수 있도록 지원한다. 더불어고객은 IBM 인스타나 오브저버빌리티(Instana Observability)를 통해 리눅스원 서버의 에너지 소비량을 추적할 수 있다.

 

IBM의 지속가능성 관련 기술 포트폴리오는 하이브리드 클라우드의 접근 방식을 준용하여,  에너지 효율적이고 혁신적인 인프라를 설계, 배포 및 관리하는솔루션을 포함하고 있다. IBM 리눅스원은 해당 포트폴리오에 포함된 솔루션으로서, 에너지 소비를 줄이고 동시에 에너지 효율을 증가시킴으로써 데이터센터를 최적화하도록 설계되었다. IBM 리눅스원 엠퍼러 4는 2022년 9월 14일 전 세계에 출시되며, 중소형 시스템은 2023년 1분기 출시 예정이다.

 

예측할  없는 수요에 대응

전 세계적 경제 변화가 가져온 변동성으로 인해 운영 및 기술 부분에서 유연한 의사결정이 필요하다. IBM 인프라가 표방해 온 전형적인 특징인 보안성, 확장성, 안정성을 그대로 이어받은 차세대 IBM 리눅스원은 클라우드와 같은 유연성을 제공한다. 온디맨드 용량 (On-Demand Capacity) 및 리소스 재조정기능은, 고객의 워크로드를 시스템 중단 없이 동적으로 수직, 수평적으로 확장할 수 있다.

 

IDC 글로벌 지속가능성 연구 총괄(Global Sustainability Research and Practice Lead)인 비외른 스텐갈(Bjorn Stengal)은 "CIO의 입장에서는변화가 전례 없는 속도로 일어나고 있다. 따라서 조직은 안정적이고, 높은 가치를 제공할 수 있는, 에너지 효율적인 인프라에 투자해야 한다"며, "IBM 리눅스원은 조직이 준수해야 하는 정부 규제와 고객 기대치를 충족할 수 있는 안전하고 확장 가능한 아키텍처를 제공한다"고 말했다. 

 

글로벌 시티은행의 경우, 은행의 지속가능성 전략은 기후 변화에 대응하고 저탄소 경제로의 전환을 지원하는 솔루션을 발전시키겠다는 약속에 의해주도된다. 운영적인 관점에서, 시티는 낮은 전력 소비 하에서도 호스팅 집적도를 개선하는 것을 포함, 시설의 환경적 설치 공간을 줄이는 데 초점을 맞추고있다. 시티은행은 IBM 리눅스원에서 몽고DB를 호스팅함으로써 플랫폼의 보안 및 복원력은 물론, 예상치 못한 수요를 해결하기 위하여 리눅스원에서제공하는 탄력적 용량 기능을 활용하고 있다.

 

시티 테크놀로지 인프라 담당 임원인 마틴 케네디(Martin Kennedy)는 "비즈니스가 성장하고 점점 디지털화됨에 따라 기존 IT 솔루션은 더 많은 물리적서버를 필요로 하고 있으며, 필요한 설치 공간도 늘어나고 있다"고 말하고, "몽고DB를 IBM 리눅스원에서 운영함으로써, 데이터베이스 서버에서 필수적인수직적 확장성, 데이터 침해 및 사이버 공격에 대응하기 위한 중요한 보호 기능을 제공하여 데이터 센터를 최적화하는 동시에 전체 탄소 배출량을 줄일 수있도록 지원하고 있다"고 말했다. 

 

보안 타협 없는 지속가능성

신규 리눅스원 시스템은 포괄적 암호화(Pervasive Encryption)기능을 제공함으로써, 데이터가 처리 및 저장되는 모든 시점에서 보호될 수 있도록 한다. 이는 금융과 같은 규제 산업에서 필수적으로 요구되고 있는 데이터 보안 요건이다. 컨피덴셜 컴퓨팅 부문에서 IBM의 클라우드 보안 리더십을 기반으로구축된 IBM 리눅스원 엠퍼러 4는 사용 중인 데이터를 보호하는 동시에 엔드-투-엔드 암호화 기능을 제공한다. 이런 통합적인 데이터 보호 기술은 기업들로하여금 현재 및 미래의 사이버 보안 규약을 뒷받침할 수 있는 데이터 보호 전략을 제공한다.

 

클라우드  온프레미스 워크로드를 위한 하이브리드 클라우드 플랫폼

하이브리드 및 멀티클라우드 환경에서 기업은 비즈니스 요구사항에 가장 적합한 곳에 워크로드를  배치해야 한다. IBM 클라우드 하이퍼 프로텍트 가상서버(IBM Cloud Hyper Protect Virtual Servers)는 클라우드 테넌트의 민감한 데이터를 포함한 워크로드를 리눅스 가상 서버에서 운영할 시, 해당 가상서버에 대한 완전한 권한을 유지할 수 있는 퍼블릭 클라우드 환경을 제공한다. IBM 리눅스원을 기반으로 IBM 클라우드 상에서 제공되는 해당 서비스는고객에게 데이터, 워크로드 및 암호화 키에 대한 모든 권한을 제공하며, 해당 고객 외에는 클라우드 제공자인 IBM조차 접근이 불가능하다.

 

IBM 리눅스원 엠퍼러 4는 데이터 서비스, 코어 뱅킹 및 디지털 자산 등을 포함한 다수의 리눅스 및 레드햇 오픈시프트(Red Hat OpenShift) 인증워크로드를 지원한다. IBM 리눅스원 엠퍼러 4는 일무이오(Ilmuio), 메타코(METACO), 몽고DB, NGINX, 엔스 익셉션(Nth Exception), 후지쯔, 페난트(Penant), SQ 솔루션, 시스딕(Sysdig, Inc.) 및 테미노스(Temenos) 등의 IBM 에코시스템 파트너로부터 지원을 받는다.

 

리눅스원 상에서 클라우드 네이티브 개발을 통해, 개발자들은 새로운 운영 체제에 대한 학습 없이도 플랫폼간 이식이 가능한 (Portable) 신속한 (Agile) 솔루션을 개발할 수 있다.
